In the foothills of the Hood River Valley lies a special 1.87 acres. This bi-level property is close to the city limits and conveniences of life yet harbors the secrets of the natural world. To the east pear trees present their delicious fare and to the south new trees have been planted awaiting their opportunity to bring forth life giving fruits. The north side of the property provides the access to the lower creekside acre. Still, my favorite place is to the west. The view gazing out from Gracie Ridge overlooks the uncorrupted wetlands of the Indian Creek. This is a pristine place, the opportunity to create your own private paradise among the nature of the beautiful Indian Creek that meanders over 300 feet among the lush Chestnut and Alder trees. This is an avid bird watcher and nature lover's dream.

The bottom acre is divided by the Indian Creek flowing from south to north. There are two springs one on the west side of the creek that used to feed the old water wheel and one on the east side near the south end of the property. The majority of the land lies on the west side of the creek and would be perfect for a second home or to create a park setting that would accent the home site on the upper view piece. Access to the bottom piece is along the north end of the property. This access could be a driveway or simply a small foot path for a trek with nature.

THE OLD HIGH HORSE "Just get down off your high horse and calm down!" I hear this saying in my head every time I see the vIntage oak tree with it's branch that looks like a horse rising 20 feet above me. I climb the hay bales and out the west window of the barn. I slide slowly down on the rough limb of the oak. Bumble bees buzz around the Oregon Grapes delicate yellow flowers while the sweet pea entangles itself around a thorny blackberry vine. The black lush berries make my mouth water. I hear the whinny of a brown horse named Cherokee below me. The grove of oak and alder follows the uneven path to Indian Creek in front of me. Periwinkle snails and crawdads creep along the creek bottom among the glistening fools gold and sand. I see water skippers glide around and around on the gurgling Indian Creek as pieces of cattail blossoms disappear under the old wooden bridge. I am comforted by the chimes of the old church on the hill as the notes float through the air on the west wind. The chesnut tree is in full bloom. The white blossoms with their pungent perfume wrinkle my nose as they twirl in the air. The dinner bell rings. I smell homemade chilli and rolls. The frog choir has begun along the Indian Creek. All is at peace as I come down off my high horse. Excerpts from "THE OLD HIGH HORSE" written by Cynthia Arbuckle Hart |
